Repression in Pittsburgh in the Aftermath of the George Floyd Rebellion

Monday, April 11th, 2022

Originally published by It’s Going Down

Report from so-called Pittsburgh on the aftermath of the George Floyd uprising and the need to support those facing repression.

Compared to some places, Pittsburgh got off to a slow start in protesting the murder of George Floyd. A few activist groups finally called for a protest march on May 30, nearly a week after Floyd’s slaying, and several days after intense riots had broken out in Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, and other cities. Even then, many observers, jaded by years of permitted parades that never seriously challenged the power structure in Allegheny County, weren’t expecting a lot. In their request for legal observers, even the march organizers estimated the expected crowd size at only 30 people. It ended up drawing over 100 times that many.

The afternoon of May 30th began in typical fashion. Protesters gathered downtown, organizers made impassioned speeches, while medics and other support folks fanned out and got themselves situated. The only difference was the crowd kept growing. By the time the march left Market Square it numbered in the thousands, and more people were flowing by the minute. The original plan of sticking to the sidewalk was obviously a nonstarter, but marchers were otherwise peaceful as they made their way slowly through downtown and up the hill toward PPG Paints Arena, accompanied by the usual chanting.

It’s still not entirely clear how the riot started. Pittsburgh’s corporate media rushed to pin blame on one person who allegedly broke a window of a police cruiser, an act that supposedly compelled hundreds of people, most of whom hadn’t even seen it, to spend the next several hours rampaging through downtown smashing windows and looting stores. More astute observers pointed out that, if one wanted to assign responsibility for the riots on a single violent act by a lone individual, there was always Derek Chauvin. Regardless, by the evening of the 30th, downtown Pittsburgh was a shambles. Over 70 stores had their windows broken, as did the downtown police substation, and a couple of police cruisers got torched. Many businesses were looted as well. One hapless Cricket dealership resorted to posting a hand-written sign on their door pleading “STORE IS ALREADY ROBBED Do Not Try Again.”

The Pittsburgh cops were caught by surprise and deeply embarrassed. They would spend the next year and a half extracting payback for their loss of face. Subsequent protests were met with the kind of brutality more often associated with police departments in Chicago and Los Angeles, belying Pittsburgh’s carefully cultivated reputation as a liberal bastion of free speech. Two days after the riot, a protest march was attacked with tear gas and projectile weapons, for no greater offense than spray painting a building and continuing past the time police had decided it should end. No dispersal warning was ever given. One family just trying to escape the fray with their children were teargassed from a passing cop car. Two women who had been merely filming the action from the balcony of their apartment building were raided and arrested on suspicion of throwing objects down at the cops, although no evidence of this allegation was ever presented. Throughout the summer, demonstrators were subjected to harassment and arbitrary arrests, including one activist who was snatched off the street by undercover cops in an unmarked vehicle. Those seen as leaders were particular targets, with several arrested multiple times for supposed violations that would have excited little comment during, say, the aftermath of a home Steelers game. One demonstrator, who had been blinded in one eye by a “less-lethal” projectile on the 30th, was later charged with several felonies only after revealing their intention to sue the police.

In addition to the spectacular arrests and repression that were obviously designed to suppress activism and protest, the Pittsburgh police also initiated a much quieter effort to identify and arrest anyone who could be identified from video footage protesting on the 30th. Despite no one having been injured that day except protesters, a task force of a size more appropriate to a serial murder investigation was assembled to pursue charges against demonstrators for breaking windows at worst, and in some cases for merely being present during the disturbance. Their goal seems to be to “take attendance” in order to fill up their database of dissidents, as well as ruining the lives of as many activists as possible to discourage further resistance to the ruling order. The task force also seems to have included federal law enforcement, who have singled out a handful of protesters for federal felony charges of Obstruction of Law Enforcement During a Civil Disorder. These charges are more serious than most of those leveled against the January 6th rioters in DC who invaded the Capitol building, showing the usual law enforcement bias in favor of the far right.

Today, nearly two years after the uprising, many of the organizations that organized George Floyd actions have moved on, or dissolved entirely. Activists are doing the proverbial “stepping back to do self care” routine, which is often simply a prelude to retirement. Unfortunately, the criminal “justice” system has a longer attention span. Protesters fighting felony charges do not have the luxury of retirement, and they are being abandoned by the same organizers who called them into the street in the first place. Over 60 individuals have been charged with felonies for protesting police brutality, and most of them are still dealing with their cases in one way or another. Seven are incarcerated, either serving sentences or awaiting trials. They need continuing financial support in the form of commissary money to afford the snacks, toiletries, and other items that make life behind bars somewhat more bearable.

Please donate to the commissary fund. All proceeds will go to commissary and legal support for people facing felony charges for protesting in the Pittsburgh area.

Improvement of a Pro-Forced-Birth Billboard in Pittsburgh

Thursday, March 3rd, 2022

Anonymous submission received 03.02.22.

Some time recently in the early hours, autonomous individuals improved a billboard in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The billboard promotes a pro-forced-birth (“pro-life”) message and an organization that gives false medical information to pregnant people seeking abortions. It also moralizes this normal, beneficial, and simple medical procedure at a time when people in the United States are losing legal access to their bodily autonomy. The billboard said Cherish Life, Heart Beat 18 Days from Conception and had a picture of a baby on it.

The individuals climbed the billboard and used spray paint to counter the harmful messaging. NO FORCED BIRTH was painted twice, once in white underneath the lettering and once in blue on the baby’s head.

Abortion is only one prong of reproductive justice (See https://www.sistersong.net/reproductive-justice for more information), but it is a prong that is quickly being taken away from us. Pro-forced-birth organizations have been and continued to be allowed to operate with minimal, if any, consequences. If we are to defend and expand abortion access, and ultimately achieve full reproductive justice, those of us who value bodily autonomy must oppose these bigots through direct confrontation and sabotage. Think of them like you would white nationalists, and you’ll know what to do.

If you have some extra money, one way to help local people seeking abortions is to donate to Western PA Fund for Choice, https://www.wpafundforchoice.org/ . All money directly funds someone’s abortion!

PITTSBURGH: Shell Gas Station Locked Down in Solidarity with Global Coastline Rebellion

Sunday, February 20th, 2022

[Anonymous submission received 02.18.22]

Autonomous individuals used bicycle locks to shut down a Shell gas station in Pittsburgh. Four pump stations, each with two unleaded fuel dispensers, were disabled by pulling the fuel nozzle handles toward metal bars surrounding the pump stations, then locking the nozzle handles to the metal bars. Each lock had the words “Shell Kills” attached to it along with Shell’s logo in the form of a skull.

This direct action temporarily disabled a part of the fossil fuel system, imposing costs on Shell. Others are encouraged to replicate this action, as well as use other direct action tactics to destroy fossil fuel companies like Shell. The individuals also wished to express solidarity with protestors across the world who recently took part in the Global Coastline Rebellion against Shell and other fossil fuel companies.

The time to wait for these companies to stop their assault is over. Politicians will not and cannot take the necessary action. Direct action is needed to impose costs on these companies, so they will no longer stand in the way of a liveable future for the world.

PITTSBURGH: Spray Paint at the Home of Climate Profiteer Murry Gerber

Tuesday, January 25th, 2022

Anonymous submission received 01.14.22

While millionaires in the fossil fuel industry will self-describe as pioneers of clean energy, there are environmental activists who will paint more accurate labels at their residences. This week “Climate Criminal” was spray painted with an arrow pointed to the entrance of Murry Gerber’s mansion: 75 Woodland Rd. Pittsburgh, Pa.

Murry Gerber’s estimated net worth is at least 470 million dollars as of Dec 2021. He is an active board member of BlackRock and has been since 2000. He is also a director at Halliburton: top profiteer of the war in Afghanistan. BlackRock fails to acknowledge the conflict of interests of their climate change commitments with having Gerber as their Lead Independent Director(LID). Gerber is still heavily invested in the fossil fuels industry; he overlaps three active directorships with BlackRock, Halliburton, and U.S. Steel.

Murry Gerber was a former CEO of Coral Energy (an affiliate of Royal Dutch Shell) for three years (1995-98); and he was also the former chairman, CEO, and president of EQT for over 20 years. The Shell cracker plant, located on the Ohio river in Monaca, Pa, is projected to produce 1.6 million metric tons of plastic pellets annually starting this year. EQT is responsible for the 303 miles of the Mountain Valley Pipeline and is the largest natural gas producer in the Appalachian Basin. The fracking boom that poisons Appalachia and its inhabitants added millions to Murry Gerber’s pockets.

The consequences of climate change continues to incur at the expense of those who do not inhabit gated mansions. It is up to environmental activists to call out these climate criminals at their own residences. This man is a criminal, and those who work to protect the environment will continue to label these big oil profiteers as the crooks they are.

PITTSBURGH: Jag Unable to Call Cops

Friday, January 21st, 2022

[Anonymous submission received 01.13.22]

Our crew spent the other night painting and covering up Patriot Front stickers around East Liberty. Some uppity jag in a brand new Audi pulled up and threatened to call the cops. One of us walked up to try and de-escalate.

With the jag’s attention focused on our homie approaching the driver side window, the other two of us casually circled around the vehicle. The jag didn’t realize we were giving him an out, not the other way around.

He pulled out his phone, probably expecting us to scatter as he dialed. But three slashed tires later he quickly agreed to just call a tow truck instead, and we agreed to go home. We changed clothes and got home safe.

Fuck Ed Gainey and Fuck the RNC

Tuesday, January 11th, 2022

[Anonymous submission received on 01.09.22]

Fuck You Ed Gainey and Fuck the RNC

It only took a week for Ed Gainey to decide that the largely good feelings based campaign he ran could be safely set aside in favor of the “we love the ‘economy’ more than people” that seems to be the main line of the Democratic party more broadly these days. The new mayor of so-called Pittsburgh sent a letter to the RNC saying the city would be “excited” to host the 2024 event. In short, fuck you Ed Gainey for inviting the RNC to Pittsburgh, and fuck the RNC. Don’t come, your time here will be unpleasant.

Conventions and Their Consequences

The (tired) justification for bringing this gathering of fascists to town is that it will “help the local economy”. In this case, the “economy” should be understood to be the monied interest in the downtown area – mainly real estate and hotels businesses. This relatively limited amount of money (four nights of hotel stays and people at the Primantis in Market Square) is of course not weighed against what it will cost to generate.

But those costs are paid by people Ed Gainey wouldn’t give the time of day, let alone actually attempt to help using his political power, so he’s unbothered. Houseless people will be forced out of downtown systematically to “clean up the streets” and those that escape the increased surveillance that proceeds such an event will be vulnerable to the ghoulish attendees of the RNC. Those same ghouls will of course enjoy the protection of law enforcement as they harass and torment people unable to escape.

The increased state repression is not limited to the people in the area of the convention either. We have only to look to St. Paul in 2008 for an example of how this will play out. The no-knock warrants executed before the RNC as pretext to get organizers off the street were just the tip of the mass-police-violence iceberg. Over 15 years later the police are only more militarized and the surveillance state is only more vast. In the rather…charged…political climate expected in 2024, law enforcement will only be more brutal.

For events closer to home, look to G20 Pittsburgh in 2009. For someone who’s been in the region his whole life, Ed Gainey sure seems to have forgotten. The mass arrests, the use of the LRAD, the courageous fight against the assembled power of global capital may have faded from his memory, but not from ours. Such a presence in the city is intolerable and must be resisted by any means possible.

The Machine Grinds On

Ed Gainey got elected on building a better, more inclusive Pittsburgh, especially for those who have been left out of it before. While this was clearly a pretext even before the invitation to the RNC, the letter lays it bare. Bringing the RNC to Pittsburgh threatens harm to vulnerable communities here but Ed Gainey was never really interested in helping those people except incidentally and as could be used for positive optics. He put out a statement condemning the actions of Republicans on January 6…and then is “excited” for those same people to have a convention here.

Democrats who prioritize the economy over people in order to bring fascists to our city should meet the same scorn as any Republican who would attempt the same. For anyone who was still excited about Ed Gainey, this should be your wakeup call. He’s going to pull the same levers with the same murderous effects that his predecessors did and the mayors who come after him will. It’s up to us to tear down this murderous order and build something better in its place.

Unwelcome Visitors: Boneheads Come to Pittsburgh for a Meeting || IDAVOX

Friday, November 12th, 2021

This report was originally published by Idavox on 11.11.21

Nov. 5, 2021, Pittsburgh, PA. Graham Jones Whitson dines with out-of-town Patriot Front members at the Pittsburgh Hofbrauhaus.

We are assuming since Philly didn’t go as planned during the Fourth of July weekend, Patriot Front and a few friends tried to get together on the other side of Pennsylvania this time!

On Friday Nov. 5th a few locals with a good eye spotted a known member of the Patriot Front organization, Graham Jones Whitson, having dinner with about 20 people at the Hofbrauhaus in the southside of Pittsburgh. Locals noticed clothing with Nazi insignia and Tshirts sporting the racist music genre know as R.A.C. being worn by those dining with Mr. Whitson. When Hofbrauhaus staff were alerted to the situation, they chose to ignore it.

In mid September this Hofbrauhaus location made the news when General Manager Vincent Quinzio threw a temper tantrum while hurling racial slurs at musicians and staff of “The Barrel and Flow” festival that was being held next door. This festival is focused on Black made beer and Black brewers and is one of the very few in our entire country. The company suspended GM Quinzio but one month later reinstated him back to his original position. The Hofbrauhaus’s chain originated in Munich Germany, and boasts multiple locations in the United States. Considering that Nazi insignia is banned in Germany it is interesting that they allow patrons to proudly wear them at the Pittsburgh location.

On Saturday Nov. 6th, members of Patriot Front attended an event held by the NJP at the Boyce Park Four Seasons Activity Center. Instead of meeting inside of the city of Pittsburgh it looks like they settled for a suburb a half hour outside of town. This event was booked, through the state park, as a “wedding”. Concerned citizens out for a walk spotted suspicious activity and photographed various fascists outside of the conference center. The photographs include Patriot Front leader, Thomas Ryan Rousseau, outside of the building wearing his signature stupid hat.

Nov. 6, 2021, Plum, PA. Fascists dressed to impress at their “wedding” at Boyce State Park.
Nov. 6, 2021, Plum, PA. Patriot Front members outside of their event at Boyce State Park.

The National Justice Party (NJP) and the Patriot Front are trying desperately to appear as respectable social movements who are open and above ground. Yet they still meet in secret and make violent threats on social media and internet forums. Their literature and ideology illustrates the same old tired racist garbage people like them have been spewing for centuries. Every one of their talking points and beliefs is easily disproved and debunked. They are gaining ground with white reactionary people who are left out in the cold by government corruption and its broken system. Make no mistake about it, these are just the current generation of egomaniacs who are looking to use fascist racism for personal gain. NJP podcasts are well funded by regular listeners duped by the message. Make no mistake, the message is fascism.

Several cars from the Boyce Park event were followed back to a Pittsburgh hotel on Saturday. On Sunday, Pittsburgh area S.H.A.R.P.’s confirmed this lodging information and stated the PF members confronted in the parking lot refused to engage even though they had larger numbers, choosing instead to hide in their car frantically making phone calls.
