Repression in Pittsburgh in the Aftermath of the George Floyd Rebellion

Monday, April 11th, 2022

Originally published by It’s Going Down

Report from so-called Pittsburgh on the aftermath of the George Floyd uprising and the need to support those facing repression.

Compared to some places, Pittsburgh got off to a slow start in protesting the murder of George Floyd. A few activist groups finally called for a protest march on May 30, nearly a week after Floyd’s slaying, and several days after intense riots had broken out in Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, and other cities. Even then, many observers, jaded by years of permitted parades that never seriously challenged the power structure in Allegheny County, weren’t expecting a lot. In their request for legal observers, even the march organizers estimated the expected crowd size at only 30 people. It ended up drawing over 100 times that many.

The afternoon of May 30th began in typical fashion. Protesters gathered downtown, organizers made impassioned speeches, while medics and other support folks fanned out and got themselves situated. The only difference was the crowd kept growing. By the time the march left Market Square it numbered in the thousands, and more people were flowing by the minute. The original plan of sticking to the sidewalk was obviously a nonstarter, but marchers were otherwise peaceful as they made their way slowly through downtown and up the hill toward PPG Paints Arena, accompanied by the usual chanting.

It’s still not entirely clear how the riot started. Pittsburgh’s corporate media rushed to pin blame on one person who allegedly broke a window of a police cruiser, an act that supposedly compelled hundreds of people, most of whom hadn’t even seen it, to spend the next several hours rampaging through downtown smashing windows and looting stores. More astute observers pointed out that, if one wanted to assign responsibility for the riots on a single violent act by a lone individual, there was always Derek Chauvin. Regardless, by the evening of the 30th, downtown Pittsburgh was a shambles. Over 70 stores had their windows broken, as did the downtown police substation, and a couple of police cruisers got torched. Many businesses were looted as well. One hapless Cricket dealership resorted to posting a hand-written sign on their door pleading “STORE IS ALREADY ROBBED Do Not Try Again.”

The Pittsburgh cops were caught by surprise and deeply embarrassed. They would spend the next year and a half extracting payback for their loss of face. Subsequent protests were met with the kind of brutality more often associated with police departments in Chicago and Los Angeles, belying Pittsburgh’s carefully cultivated reputation as a liberal bastion of free speech. Two days after the riot, a protest march was attacked with tear gas and projectile weapons, for no greater offense than spray painting a building and continuing past the time police had decided it should end. No dispersal warning was ever given. One family just trying to escape the fray with their children were teargassed from a passing cop car. Two women who had been merely filming the action from the balcony of their apartment building were raided and arrested on suspicion of throwing objects down at the cops, although no evidence of this allegation was ever presented. Throughout the summer, demonstrators were subjected to harassment and arbitrary arrests, including one activist who was snatched off the street by undercover cops in an unmarked vehicle. Those seen as leaders were particular targets, with several arrested multiple times for supposed violations that would have excited little comment during, say, the aftermath of a home Steelers game. One demonstrator, who had been blinded in one eye by a “less-lethal” projectile on the 30th, was later charged with several felonies only after revealing their intention to sue the police.

In addition to the spectacular arrests and repression that were obviously designed to suppress activism and protest, the Pittsburgh police also initiated a much quieter effort to identify and arrest anyone who could be identified from video footage protesting on the 30th. Despite no one having been injured that day except protesters, a task force of a size more appropriate to a serial murder investigation was assembled to pursue charges against demonstrators for breaking windows at worst, and in some cases for merely being present during the disturbance. Their goal seems to be to “take attendance” in order to fill up their database of dissidents, as well as ruining the lives of as many activists as possible to discourage further resistance to the ruling order. The task force also seems to have included federal law enforcement, who have singled out a handful of protesters for federal felony charges of Obstruction of Law Enforcement During a Civil Disorder. These charges are more serious than most of those leveled against the January 6th rioters in DC who invaded the Capitol building, showing the usual law enforcement bias in favor of the far right.

Today, nearly two years after the uprising, many of the organizations that organized George Floyd actions have moved on, or dissolved entirely. Activists are doing the proverbial “stepping back to do self care” routine, which is often simply a prelude to retirement. Unfortunately, the criminal “justice” system has a longer attention span. Protesters fighting felony charges do not have the luxury of retirement, and they are being abandoned by the same organizers who called them into the street in the first place. Over 60 individuals have been charged with felonies for protesting police brutality, and most of them are still dealing with their cases in one way or another. Seven are incarcerated, either serving sentences or awaiting trials. They need continuing financial support in the form of commissary money to afford the snacks, toiletries, and other items that make life behind bars somewhat more bearable.

Please donate to the commissary fund. All proceeds will go to commissary and legal support for people facing felony charges for protesting in the Pittsburgh area.

Fuck Ed Gainey and Fuck the RNC

Tuesday, January 11th, 2022

[Anonymous submission received on 01.09.22]

Fuck You Ed Gainey and Fuck the RNC

It only took a week for Ed Gainey to decide that the largely good feelings based campaign he ran could be safely set aside in favor of the “we love the ‘economy’ more than people” that seems to be the main line of the Democratic party more broadly these days. The new mayor of so-called Pittsburgh sent a letter to the RNC saying the city would be “excited” to host the 2024 event. In short, fuck you Ed Gainey for inviting the RNC to Pittsburgh, and fuck the RNC. Don’t come, your time here will be unpleasant.

Conventions and Their Consequences

The (tired) justification for bringing this gathering of fascists to town is that it will “help the local economy”. In this case, the “economy” should be understood to be the monied interest in the downtown area – mainly real estate and hotels businesses. This relatively limited amount of money (four nights of hotel stays and people at the Primantis in Market Square) is of course not weighed against what it will cost to generate.

But those costs are paid by people Ed Gainey wouldn’t give the time of day, let alone actually attempt to help using his political power, so he’s unbothered. Houseless people will be forced out of downtown systematically to “clean up the streets” and those that escape the increased surveillance that proceeds such an event will be vulnerable to the ghoulish attendees of the RNC. Those same ghouls will of course enjoy the protection of law enforcement as they harass and torment people unable to escape.

The increased state repression is not limited to the people in the area of the convention either. We have only to look to St. Paul in 2008 for an example of how this will play out. The no-knock warrants executed before the RNC as pretext to get organizers off the street were just the tip of the mass-police-violence iceberg. Over 15 years later the police are only more militarized and the surveillance state is only more vast. In the rather…charged…political climate expected in 2024, law enforcement will only be more brutal.

For events closer to home, look to G20 Pittsburgh in 2009. For someone who’s been in the region his whole life, Ed Gainey sure seems to have forgotten. The mass arrests, the use of the LRAD, the courageous fight against the assembled power of global capital may have faded from his memory, but not from ours. Such a presence in the city is intolerable and must be resisted by any means possible.

The Machine Grinds On

Ed Gainey got elected on building a better, more inclusive Pittsburgh, especially for those who have been left out of it before. While this was clearly a pretext even before the invitation to the RNC, the letter lays it bare. Bringing the RNC to Pittsburgh threatens harm to vulnerable communities here but Ed Gainey was never really interested in helping those people except incidentally and as could be used for positive optics. He put out a statement condemning the actions of Republicans on January 6…and then is “excited” for those same people to have a convention here.

Democrats who prioritize the economy over people in order to bring fascists to our city should meet the same scorn as any Republican who would attempt the same. For anyone who was still excited about Ed Gainey, this should be your wakeup call. He’s going to pull the same levers with the same murderous effects that his predecessors did and the mayors who come after him will. It’s up to us to tear down this murderous order and build something better in its place.

Unwelcome Visitors: Boneheads Come to Pittsburgh for a Meeting || IDAVOX

Friday, November 12th, 2021

This report was originally published by Idavox on 11.11.21

Nov. 5, 2021, Pittsburgh, PA. Graham Jones Whitson dines with out-of-town Patriot Front members at the Pittsburgh Hofbrauhaus.

We are assuming since Philly didn’t go as planned during the Fourth of July weekend, Patriot Front and a few friends tried to get together on the other side of Pennsylvania this time!

On Friday Nov. 5th a few locals with a good eye spotted a known member of the Patriot Front organization, Graham Jones Whitson, having dinner with about 20 people at the Hofbrauhaus in the southside of Pittsburgh. Locals noticed clothing with Nazi insignia and Tshirts sporting the racist music genre know as R.A.C. being worn by those dining with Mr. Whitson. When Hofbrauhaus staff were alerted to the situation, they chose to ignore it.

In mid September this Hofbrauhaus location made the news when General Manager Vincent Quinzio threw a temper tantrum while hurling racial slurs at musicians and staff of “The Barrel and Flow” festival that was being held next door. This festival is focused on Black made beer and Black brewers and is one of the very few in our entire country. The company suspended GM Quinzio but one month later reinstated him back to his original position. The Hofbrauhaus’s chain originated in Munich Germany, and boasts multiple locations in the United States. Considering that Nazi insignia is banned in Germany it is interesting that they allow patrons to proudly wear them at the Pittsburgh location.

On Saturday Nov. 6th, members of Patriot Front attended an event held by the NJP at the Boyce Park Four Seasons Activity Center. Instead of meeting inside of the city of Pittsburgh it looks like they settled for a suburb a half hour outside of town. This event was booked, through the state park, as a “wedding”. Concerned citizens out for a walk spotted suspicious activity and photographed various fascists outside of the conference center. The photographs include Patriot Front leader, Thomas Ryan Rousseau, outside of the building wearing his signature stupid hat.

Nov. 6, 2021, Plum, PA. Fascists dressed to impress at their “wedding” at Boyce State Park.
Nov. 6, 2021, Plum, PA. Patriot Front members outside of their event at Boyce State Park.

The National Justice Party (NJP) and the Patriot Front are trying desperately to appear as respectable social movements who are open and above ground. Yet they still meet in secret and make violent threats on social media and internet forums. Their literature and ideology illustrates the same old tired racist garbage people like them have been spewing for centuries. Every one of their talking points and beliefs is easily disproved and debunked. They are gaining ground with white reactionary people who are left out in the cold by government corruption and its broken system. Make no mistake about it, these are just the current generation of egomaniacs who are looking to use fascist racism for personal gain. NJP podcasts are well funded by regular listeners duped by the message. Make no mistake, the message is fascism.

Several cars from the Boyce Park event were followed back to a Pittsburgh hotel on Saturday. On Sunday, Pittsburgh area S.H.A.R.P.’s confirmed this lodging information and stated the PF members confronted in the parking lot refused to engage even though they had larger numbers, choosing instead to hide in their car frantically making phone calls.

We Don’t Dial 911 in Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood

Thursday, October 21st, 2021

PDF download: https://archive.org/details/rogers-poster

We were inspired by the posters going up around town, and so we printed another design. Email us if you want a stack for distro.

Formatted for 11.5×17 tabloid size paper.

~ RIP Jim Rogers ~

On October 13, several Pittsburgh police officers responded to a call about a possible bike theft in Bloomfield. According to neighbors, Jim Rogers rode a bike that was sitting on a neighbor’s lawn, returned it, then smoked a cigarette on a porch. Neighbors say the bike had been for sale and sitting outside for some time, although the sign was recently removed after the kid’s mother had previously stated, “If anybody wants it, just take it.”1

When police arrived, they attempted to arrest Mr. Rogers, who disagreed with the premise of an arrest-able offense and did not comply with the officers’ commands. Neighbors then witnessed officers use a Taser on Mr. Rogers three times. Jim Rogers died in the hospital shortly after. He was 54-years-old.

Let’s make Bloomfield a neighborhood that calls our friends, our neighbors, and our community organizations first. Strong communities don’t need to call the police because a Black man is riding a bike.

PITTSBURGH: September Autonomous Actions Rundown

Saturday, October 2nd, 2021

The following report-backs were sent in to Filler throughout September, 2021.

Each report is autonomous, meaning that it only represents the ideas and actions of the author(s). This rundown is comprised entirely of submissions and is not meant to be a definitive list of recent autonomous action. All reports were sent in anonymously. Dates represent the day that the report was received, and not necessarily the day the action took place.

09.02.21

On Saturday August 28th, Pittsburgh protesters occupied the area outside the home of Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald in Squirrel Hill for most of the day to call for his resignation.”

Read the full report HERE.

09.11.21

“We wanted to test out a few methods for slashing tires, and so we went on a walk. We dressed in grey bloc, avoided main streets, left our phones behind, and enjoyed a meandering route. We targeted a CMU vehicle, a gentrifying developer’s vehicle, a corporate vehicle, and a good number of those stupid scooter things cause theyre not funny and it pisses us off that their cutting public transit in favor of “green” individualized data mining operations (btw the alarms went off on all of the scooters)

Theres two methods we liked best. First, the quick intuitive method which is just taking a knife and quickly slashing- grip so your thumb is over the hilt, thrust into the side of the tire not the top, then quickly drag in the direction of the sharp end of the blade. Keep your head away cause that burst of air is loud af. Second, the quiet and discreet method which is to puncture with an awl. Takes a while to deflate if you do it right, which means the release of air is much quieter. Punctured tires can be patched though so keep that in mind.

We know this shit isn’t going to make much of a difference politically or whatever. But we learned a lot about how we operate together, practiced a bit of sabotage, had some fun and got a workout in. Maybe someday we’ll do this again as part of a long term strategy or whatever but for now it sure as hell beats netflix.

– some dumb kids”

09.13.21

“An autonomous delivery robot got got. It was one of those stupid looking ones that makes faces and has some dude with an ipad following it from a block away, he was too far away to do shit about it lol.”

09.20.21

“Your chairman sucks and so does your wheatpasting. Fuck authoritarians.”

[An editorial note for context: Flyers promoting a demonstration commemorating the life of Shining Path’s leader, Chairman Gonzalo, were torn down around Pittsburgh. The legacy of Shining Path is homophobia, indiscriminate violence, punitive “justice,” simultaneous prohibition & drug trafficking. Filler agrees with the author of this brief report: the legacy of Shining Path has no home in Pittsburgh. We can still empathize, because no one should die in prison. That being said, anarchists should translate this sentiment into abolitionist action, and not into a fencewalker’s “Left unity” that would have us ignore the real political differences that we have with authoritarian communists.]

09.23.21

Early in the morning of September 23rd, an autonomous activist dropped a banner off of the overpass along Tripoli Street. The banner was made to express solidarity with the climate strike happening on Friday, September 24th. Kill the cop/boss/principal in your head and stop participating in capitalist endevours for a day. Stop being complicit in the destruction of our only home; join the strike!

09.30.21

Some time early one morning, an autonomous person or group of persons dropped a banner on the fence of the ball field along Liberty Avenue. The banner reads “Fitzgerald Must Resign.” To the sides of the text are two red circles with a line that crosses out the words “Petro” and “Jail.”

The banner was hung as a sign of solidarity and encouragement for the recent collaborative efforts between local prison abolitionists and anti-petro activists to hold Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald accountable. Fitzgerald has been negligent in his responsibilites to the Allegheny County Jail (ACJ), where three people recently died and torture continues to take place. Fitzgerald has not been attending Jail Oversight Board meetings, as his position requires of him. He has the power to stop many of the heinous acts happening at ACJ. Yet, he does not.

Fitzgerald has also actively encouraged environmental violence to be inflicted upon the residents of the Southwestern PA region by championing fracking and petrochemical facilities. Both industrial practices infringe upon our basic human rights to clean water and living spaces that are free from toxic substances. Fitzgerald’s greed-fueled deeds can also be extrapolated to the entire human population as fracking and petrochemical facilities substaintially contribute to the climate crisis.

For these reasons, Pittsburgh activists are calling for the resignation of Rich Fitzgerald. His harmful (in)actions have proven him to be unfit for the position of power he holds and unfit to hold any future positions of power.

Editorial side note / Filler Distro updates: Lately the distro crew has been busy with tabling and printing, so we haven’t been as active with Filler‘s web presence. As a result we haven’t been publishing all of the reports that we’ve received, but this rundown should catch us up. If you sent in a submission and are still waiting for us to publish it or reply, don’t hesitate to reach out and be like “yo what the hell is taking you posers so long” because chances are we either missed it or forgot. Thanks for your patience.

We’ve been distributing regional autonomous/anarchist news, ideas, music, zines and counter-information since 2012, but Filler Distro still isn’t an “organization.” So please keep in mind that we’re just an informal affinity group / network that does Filler (printing/formating zines, tabling, filling mail-orders, reading and study groups, publishing reports on the website, tweeting dumb shit, etc.) whenever we get around to it. Fuck work, fuck professionalism.

Also, we are aware of the situation with protonmail. For the time being, we will be continuing to use protonmail as our primary public email address. Filler does not retain any records or metadata of the original submissions that we receive via protonmail, except in cases of correspondence with zine authors. That being said, we encourage all potential contributors to consider their individual threat models before submitting their content to us.

PITTSBURGH: Reportback from ‘Fitz Fest 2021’

Wednesday, September 15th, 2021

Submission from a participant in the Ohio Valley Environmental Resistance (PA) received on 09.02.21

Reportback on Fitz Fest 2021:

On Saturday August 28th, Pittsburgh protesters occupied the area outside the home of Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald in Squirrel Hill for most of the day to call for his resignation. To enjoy the gorgeous weather, the activists set up a zine and food distro in the street while playing tunes to celebrate the inability of the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County police to do anything about the occupation.  Although it rained several times throughout the action, the activists where undeterred and occupied the road for seven hours until calling it a day.  No arrests took place although the police did attempt to debate several protesters on why police are important.  They failed miserably, and were also given a cold shoulder by the neighborhood anarchist cat, Ruby.

This action was organized in response to a recent proposal in Allegheny County to militarize guards at Allegheny County Jail, but was rooted in Fitzgerald’s indifference to public concerns over numerous issues such as  air pollution, gentrification, labor rights, climate change, and mass incarceration.  While county executive, Rich Fitzgerald has used his power over county departments to create a county that is favorable for multinational corporations but not the people who he  is supposed to represent.

Some examples of this indifference are:

  • Fitzgerald has been a vocal supporter of fracking and petrochemical industry despite strong community (and global) opposition to fossil fuel development. Some of the projects he’s supported are: fracking under Deer Lakes Park and Pittsburgh International Airport, a coal mine in South Park, and the Beaver Shell Cracker Plant.  According to Marcellus Money, a website the tracks oil and gas lobbying in Pennsylvania, the natural gas industry has given $132,000 to Friends of Rich Fitzgerald, a PAC that supports Fitz and candidates he has influence over.
  • Fitzgerald refuses to attend Allegheny county jail oversight board meetings or even take calls from activists regarding the conditions of Allegheny county jail. While Fitzgerald has been executive, at least 35 inmates have died and numerous protests have been held as a result of what many activists consider criminal negligence by county government.
  • Fitzgerald was a major facilitator in the effort to have Amazon build their new headquarters in Pittsburgh, offering 2 billion dollars from the city, county, and public schools. Amazon has a record of stomping on the rights of workers to unionize while also running a supply chain deeply harmful to the environment.

Because Fitzgerald was re-elected without any Democratic Party opposition in 2019, he will be the county executive until 2023. After he leaves his role as County Executive, he may decide to run for higher offices with authority over more people.  We cannot let that happen.

It is for these reasons that Rich Fitzgerald must resign his role as Allegheny county executive. This author also recommends that Fitzgerald’s position be abolished and replaced with three county commissioners, two of whom must not be cis-white men.

PITTSBURGH: Graffiti & Zines for Week of Action Against Line 3

Friday, July 16th, 2021

Anonymous submission received on 07.15.21

Resistance to the Line 3 Pipeline in Minnesota is escalating. This past month saw thousands from across the country joining frontline activists and organizers during the Treaty People Gathering, using well-organized mass direct action to both shut down construction and to force the issue onto society’s front burner and front pages. Many remain, bolstering forces with long term frontline activists. Resistance has also been escalating geographically, spreading far and wide and using the arts-based tactics of resistance; from wheat pasted street posters, to painting street murals on the pavement, to sing outs and creative actions and disruptions of the banks that fund and profit from Line 3 and fossil fuels.”

https://www.commondreams.org/views/2021/07/03/defund-line-3-art-solidarity-we-will-paint-future

Answering the call for a week of Arts Visibility Actions to Defund Line 3 — from July 12-17, a couple of friends in so-called pittsburgh decided to make visible the ongoing anti-Line3 struggle. We dream of an end to this settler-colonial nightmare, and of a world without climate catastrophe looming large over our past, present and future. We fight for #LandBack to our Indigenous relatives, and to eradicate the pervasive anti-Blackness and xenophobia enforced by cops and borders. We refuse to concede that the future is ‘settled’ and that Indigenous sovereignty can be eroded at will by this white supremacist, imperialist, capitalist state.

At the Line 3 construction site, there has been a hyper-militarized response by police, who are funded by Enbridge (multinational corporation) to Indigenous people exercising their treaty rights.  Even as we fight state-funded cops here, we must be aware of the tactics of corporation-funded cops and develop ways to resist and subvert their advances. Water Protectors are fighting to preserve their cultural heritage, ecosystems, food sources, and putting their bodies on the line for a livable future. We see past all the greenwashing from fossil fuel companies, and the utter failure of govt/corp/nonprofit ‘leaders’ in taking meaningful action against the unfolding climate catastrophe.

We can only succeed if we whack this machine from all sides. Indigenous relatives are calling for more people to come join the struggle on the frontlines – more info here:

PITTSBURGH: Plastic Trash Left at Rich Fitzgerald’s Home to Protest Petrochemical Buildout

Sunday, July 11th, 2021

Anonymous submission received on 06.29.21

PITTSBURGH: Plastic trash left at Rich Fitzgerald’s home to protest petrochemical buildout, communique encourages everyone to do the same.

In the middle of the night on Tuesday, June 29th, four trash bags filled with plastic waste were left on the steps of Rich Fitzgerald’s house. The trash bags bore the message “STOP SUPPORTING THE PETRO INDUSTRY.” One can assume that the purpose of the display was to showcase what the Shell Ethane Cracker Plant and any other subsequent petrochemical infrastructure will likely produce: single-use plastic junk.

There was a communique attached to the display. It read:

“Residents of SWPA, you are hereby encouraged to drop off any plastic trash you find at 1314 Denniston St, to send the trash to Fitzgerald’s office in downtown Pittsburgh, or to greet him with gifts of plastic trash in person. Instead of letting the plastic end up in our food, water, and bodies, please give it to someone who loves it so much that he wants to see 1.6 billion tons more of it on our planet!”

The writer of this report can only agree with the unknown creator of this display: politicians should take responsibility for the things they advocate for.
